Commemorative Coin - Jane Goodall
Project Overview ︎︎︎
The commemorative coin project aims to honor a role model who has made significant sacrifices for society. It encompasses experimentation in 2D, 3D, and motion design, revolving around a chosen role model and a current social issue.
Jane Goodall, one of the most renowned primatologists and anthropologists, gained fame for her groundbreaking observations of human-like behaviors among chimpanzees. As a childhood hero, Jane Goodall inspired me through documentaries that fueled my interest in wild animals. The designed coin serves not only to memorialize her accomplishments but also to pay tribute to the lasting impact she had on my life."
The inception of this project initiated with the 3D design of the commemorative coin, acting as the cornerstone from which the other two components emerged. Both the 2D and motion design pieces bear connections to the societal contributions of the chosen role model. I selected the pressing issues of deforestation and habitat loss to illustrate the ongoing problems that lead to a reduction in wild animal populations.

Challenge ︎︎︎
Incorporate a unique and symbolic element into the 3D design of the commemorative coin that not only pays homage to the chosen role model but also effectively communicates a broader message related to a significant social or environmental issue.
Another challenge is to seamlessly integrate elements of 2D and motion design into the project, creating a cohesive narrative that engages viewers and raises awareness about the interconnected themes of the role model's impact and the pressing issue chosen.
Solution ︎︎︎
To address the challenge, the 3D design of the commemorative coin will feature a prominent and symbolic image representing the role model's contributions. This image will be seamlessly integrated into a dynamic 2D illustration that surrounds the coin, illustrating the broader social or environmental issue, such as deforestation and habitat loss. The motion design component will bring the narrative to life by incorporating subtle animations that underscore the urgency and interconnectedness of the themes.

Reseach ︎︎︎
The methodology employed in this project involves completing one part before delving into the research for the next segment. To enhance the design of the commemorative coin, thorough research was conducted on Jane Goodall's backstory. Despite prior knowledge gained from childhood documentaries, a comprehensive investigation into her accomplishments and experiences was undertaken to ensure accuracy.
The infographics and motion designs within the project originated from Jane Goodall's research on chimpanzees. The goal was to spotlight environmental issues facing chimpanzees, particularly focusing on deforestation and habitat loss. Global Forest Watch served as the primary source for deforestation data, chosen for its extensive coverage and constant updates. To address habitat loss, a call to action was integrated into the motion design, encouraging viewers to take proactive measures.

Ideation & Concept ︎︎︎
For the design of the commemorative coin and its packaging, the process commenced with sketching to identify images that would effectively convey the central idea of honoring Dame Jane Goodall. A selection of images featuring Jane in both contemporary and historical contexts was chosen for inclusion on the coin. The coin's shape drew inspiration from elongated pressed pennies commonly found in zoos or aquariums, aligning with the chimpanzee theme.
The packaging for the coins took the form of a trifold brochure, strategically designed to include Jane's life story and accomplishments. Various layout sketches were explored to determine the most effective visual hierarchy for the brochure.
In the creation of the deforestation infographic, the approach involved generating several elements for the poster, including shapes, charts, and graphs. The goal was to present data with a unique interpretation, leading to experimentation and trial and error in this section. Given the nature of infographics, a challenge arose regarding whether to introduce a focal point to the poster, as no single piece of data held greater importance than the others. This consideration prompted thoughtful exploration and decision-making in the design process.
In the habitat loss motion design, the primary objective is to establish a clear connection between deforestation and habitat loss, ensuring that the audience comprehends the direct impact. After delineating the causes and consequences resulting from neglecting deforestation, the intention is to incorporate impactful call-to-action messages towards the video's conclusion.
These calls to action are not limited to government initiatives; rather, the aim is to showcase practical examples that individuals can achieve in their daily lives. By presenting attainable actions, the video seeks to inspire viewers to take personal responsibility and contribute to the collective effort in addressing the issue of habitat loss.
Visual ︎︎︎
The coin design process initiated with the exploration of multiple layouts, integrating headshots of Jane Goodall and tropical leaves as decorative elements. The reverse side of the coin depicts a chimpanzee hanging on a branch, symbolizing its joyful existence in the forest. This depiction serves as a segue to the subsequent topic of deforestation, drawing a connection between the chimpanzee's natural habitat and the environmental issue.
The decision for the brochure was to prioritize informativeness and text density in the initial sections, ensuring comprehensive coverage of Jane Goodall's life story. The layout predominantly features images and text displayed within rectangular shapes, contributing to a sense of seriousness and formality. This deliberate design choice aligns with the intention to provide a thorough and respectful portrayal of Jane Goodall's accomplishments and contributions.
The data visualization piece employs multiple circle shapes to create a holistic representation, symbolizing the earth. Various data points are placed around the circle, contributing to a comprehensive view of the information. Notably, the traditional bar chart is replaced with tree canopy, aligning with the theme of deforestation and effectively illustrating the diminishing presence of trees. This innovative approach not only enhances the visual appeal but also reinforces the narrative by visually connecting the data to the core message of environmental impact.
In the motion design, a strategic arrangement of multiple videos depicting the causes of deforestation serves as the introduction. Concurrently, a countdown highlights the alarming rate at which trees are being cut down and habitats are being destroyed, creating a sense of urgency. A flash sequence featuring endangered animals affected by deforestation follows, intensifying the emotional impact.
The culmination of the video presents a final call to action, emphasizing the imperative need to halt deforestation. The message encourages individuals to take actionable steps in their daily lives, contributing to the collective effort to address this pressing environmental concern.
Refinement ︎︎︎
The final design of the coin takes on the formal shape of a Canadian commemorative coin, emphasizing its tangible value. This decision diverges from the elongated penny format typically associated with souvenirs, reinforcing the significance and purpose of the commemorative coin in honoring Jane Goodall and addressing the critical theme of deforestation.
To enhance the visual narrative, a variety of tropical leaves were incorporated at the back of the coin. These leaves are arranged in a frame, creating the illusion that the audience is observing the chimpanzee through a binocular. This imagery resonates with the front side of the coin, where Jane Goodall is depicted holding a binocular to observe the chimpanzees. The cohesive design elements serve to connect the viewer with the subject matter and create a compelling visual story.
Final Outcome ︎︎︎
Personal Takeaway︎︎︎
This project has been a profound exploration into the intricate interplay between design and advocacy. From commemorating a childhood hero to addressing critical environmental issues, each facet unfolded as a visual narrative. The synthesis of formality in coin design, the resonance of shapes in data visualization, and the emotional impact of motion design have collectively deepened my understanding of the power of design in conveying meaningful messages. Beyond aesthetics, this journey reaffirmed the responsibility designers hold in amplifying important narratives and driving positive change.
